Surfing the Web could become a costly experience for British internet users under a plan agreed last week by Charles Clarke, the Home Secretary, to force ISPs to retain internet data for 12 months.

Currently AOL retains internet data for three months, though this could be hiked to the full 12-month period as early as the autumn.

The American giant added a cost estimate of £23m to implement the regime, and £8m a year to maintain it through computer systems. It was too early to tell whether the scheme would affect customer’s internet bills, the company said.

Asked whether claims from MEPs that a search for file-specific information could take up to fifty years were valid, the ISPA UK said: “It all depends on what information the ISP is retaining and how they are actually retaining it.
